Patriot Pass System 2009-2010

*Starts November 2, 2009*

voidedhighfive:

Southwest Middle School implements a school-wide Character Education Program and a major component of this program is “The Patriot Pass Program.”  This amazing program is a collaborative partnership between our staff, community, parents and students.  The program utilizes a recognition/reward-centered approach to building character. Through this program, every adult in our school teaches expected behaviors and seeks opportunities to reward students for doing the right thing.  Students who display academic excellence and exemplary character are awarded “High-Five’s.”  Each teacher is given a “High-Five” stamp.  Each “High-Five” stamp is equivalent to five points.  Each block, teachers will check the following areas at a glance: homework completion, agenda/materials, expected behaviors, dress code and punctuality.  At a glance, students receive five points or no points.  That means they receive (1) “High-Five” because all areas are proficient or no “High-Five” because they have not demonstrated all five areas of SWMS’ expectations.   The “High-Five” stamp is placed in the agenda, on the correct day and in the content area that is taught.  Please note:  9th Block is written in the agenda by the student.

Southwest students have an opportunity to earn a maximum of (5) High-Fives per day, and (25) High-Fives per week.

Students also have random opportunities to earn additional “High-Five’s”.  These opportunities are provide by SWMS’ Administrative Team.  The team provides “P.O.P.” opportunities.  These are unexpected, unannounced school-wide opportunities to catch students demonstrating one or more of the “High-Five” areas.   P.O.P. provides second-chance opportunities to allow students to make their goal and work toward class recognition.  Additionally, “P.O.P.” opportunities are randomly provided once a week.

At the end of the week, students who have at least 105 points or 21 out of 25 “High-Five’s” will receive a Patriot Pass on a “Pay Day” for that week.

Patriot Passes are issued twice a month on “Pay Days” by Mrs. Barber, the 6th Grade Counselor and select-members of the Service and Leadership classes. “Pay-Days” are typically around the 16th and 30th of each month.  These are days that have been scheduled to count “High-Five’s” and issue Patriot Passes.

Students then decide on whether they will use their Patriot Passes at the Character Store, which is open twice a month after a Pay Day, or students can save their Patriot Passes for quarterly School-wide Incentives such a Talent Show, Movies at Southwest Middle School, or Books, Blankets and Board games.

Our Patriot Pass Program promotes school-wide expectations.  It also helps to create a positive climate that motivates and challenges our students to set goals, strive for excellence, become model citizens, and make the connection between school and their future.  This Program is also a plus when it comes to teaching students about economics and the importance of making quality decisions in life.
