Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an in-school academic support program that prepares fourth through 12th-grade students for college eligibility and success. AVID is for all students, but targets those in the academic middle. The AVID program now serves nearly 200,000 students in more than 2,700 middle and high schools in 39 states and 15 countries. AVID targets students in the academic middle – B, C and even D students – who have the desire to go to college and are willing to work hard. These students are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. AVID students may meet one or more of the following criteria: first in family to attend college, historically underserved in four-year colleges, or low-income or special circumstances. AVID moves these students into more challenging courses and puts them on the college track. |

Goals of AVID
The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:
-
Will succeed in rigorous curriculum
-
Will complete a rigorous college preparatory path
-
Will enter mainstream activities of the school
-
Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges
-
Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society
The AVID Elective
Students are not only enrolled in their school’s toughest classes such as Honors and Advanced Placement, but also are enrolled in the AVID elective. AVID teaches organizational and study skills, critical thinking and how to ask probing questions, offers academic help from peers and tutors and enrichment and motivational activities to make college attainable. Students can become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
