Title I Parent Involvement Policy - English

The parent involvement plan for Rama Road Elementary Title I Targeted Assistance School (TAS) program encourages each parent to be involved in their child’s education. During the 2009-2010 school year the following activities / strategies will be implemented in an effort to strengthen our family/school relationships.

TAS parents will receive a copy of the Parent Involvement Plan which includes the activities and initiatives being held to inform and involve parents in their child’s education (this document).

Parents will receive a copy of the Parent/School Learning Compact during first quarter parent teacher conference. This agreement between the parent, student, teacher and administrative team (in both English and Spanish) clearly outlines everyone’s responsibility in the learning process.

A Title I Parent Meeting will be held on October 1, 2009 for grades K-5 and during Pre-K open house for Pre-K families. The meeting will include the following items:   Explanation of Title I and No Child Left Behind, description of parent rights, AYP subgroups for Rama, assessment information, and ways parents can be involved in their child’s education including participation in creation of the School Improvement Plan.

The following is a list of programs and activities that Rama Road Elementary is initiating to actively involve parents and increase parent – school partnerships.

An Open House will be held on August 20, 2009 from 5:30-7:30 PM. This “drop-in” event will give parents and students an opportunity to meet their teacher for the upcoming school year. Behavioral expectations and homework policies for the year will be discussed.

A Curriculum Night will be held at the beginning of each semester (September 3 and February 4). These events will provide teachers with an opportunity to share academic goals and objectives for the upcoming semester. Parents will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled on October 29th and 30th. Our goal is to conference with 100% of our parents. Translators (Family Advocate and High School students) will be available for translation. Teachers have been given the flexibility to meet up to two weeks prior to these conference dates or one week after in an attempt to accommodate parents with challenging schedules. For those parents who are not able to attend at Rama, home visits or phone conferences will be utilized.

Over the course of the school year Rama will host four parent workshop events focusing on the following areas: writing, math, literacy and end-of-grade test preparation. At certain events food and transportation will be provided for TAS parents. These events will provide parents, teacher and students an opportunity to work together on specific content objectives, strategies, and ways parents can support their children’s education at home.

Teachers will create a Personalized Education Plan for all TAS students. The plan will identify specific strengths and deficits for each student. The plan will be shared with parents periodically over the course of the year.

School newsletters will be sent home twice each month. These newsletters will include valuable information for parents regarding upcoming events, tips and strategies for working with students at home, and the latest news regarding the staff and students at Rama Road.

Each child will be provided an agenda or communication folder to facilitate two-way daily communication between the parent and the teacher.

Title I funds have been allocated to hire a full-time bi-lingual Family Advocate. This Family Advocate will facilitate strong family/school partnerships for all our TAS families. In addition, she will be able to facilitate better communication between the school and parents of our ESL TAS families.

A new committee will be formed this year at Rama, Community and School Involvement (CSI). This committee will work to coordinate after-school events involving teachers, the Parent Teacher Association, and our faith –based partner Sardis Presbyterian Church.

System wide Parent University courses will be marketed and made available to Rama families via mass communication involving fliers, connect ed calls, newsletters blurbs, emails, etc.

Rama Road Elementary will continue to foster strong partnerships with community organizations including Sardis Presbyterian Church, Country Day School, Providence Day School, Right Moves for Youth, Charlotte Chess Society, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Have Life Ministries, Providence Baptist Church, the Kiwanis Club, Chick-Fil-A, and Fifth Third Bank to better meet the needs of our students and their families.

Parents are continuously encouraged to communicate with the teachers, support staff and administrative team at Rama Road Elementary. Our “open door” policy is intended to facilitate strong family/school relationships.
