Oakhurst History

  • 1925 Monroe Road School and Progress School were consolidated to form Oakhurst School.
  • 1925-1945 Oakhurst School served grades 1-11
  • 1943-1949 The Oakhurst community used the old gym for various sporting events
  • 1945-1950 Oakhurst School served grades 1-12
  • 1950 Grades 10, 11, and 12 left Oakhurst to attend East Mecklenburg High School; Oakhurst became a 1-9 school
  • 1955 Grades 7, 8, and 9 left Oakhurst to attend McClintock Junior High School; Oakhurst became a 1-6 school
  • 1960-1964 Oakhurst established itself a solid growing 1-6 school
  • 1964 A new wing was added to accommodate the increased enrollment
  • 1970 Oakhurst became an integrated school
  • 1973 Oakhurst was one of 21 state supported schools in which kindergartens were organized
  • 1989 Oakhurst implements the Paideia philosophy becoming Charlotte's first Paideia school
  • 1992 Oakhurst undergoes renovations--Gets new media center and office area
  • 1993 Oakhurst opens the Garden of Learning as an outdoor science lab
  • 1995 Oakhurst becomes a magnet school and becomes known as the Paideia Academy at Oakhurst
  • 2001 Oakhurst combined with New Grier Road Elementary for the 2001-2003 school years as Oakhurst begins major renovations that will double its size
  • 2003 Oakhurst School reopens new building
  • 2007 Oakhurst School named "Magnet School of Distinction" by Magnet Schools of America
  • 2008 Oakhurst School named "Magnet School of Excellence" by Magnet Schools of America
  • 2008  Oakhurst acheives High Growth ABC status
  • 2009  Oakhurst School named "Magnet School of Distinction" by Magnet Schools of America
