The Principal's Corner…

To our Nations Ford Elementary School families:

The greatest schools are not necessarily those with the highest test scores, but rather those that enable students to achieve their potential and beyond. In our efforts to make this a distinct characteristic of Nations Ford Elementary, we must first realize the importance of nurturing relationships with every student—relationships that are built on genuine interest, trust, honesty, integrity and empathy.

The state introduced a new reading test in 2007-2008. As a result of more rigorous expectations, reading scores declined across the state, including in CMS. Since the new test covers different material from that covered in the previous test, direct year-over-year comparisons are not necessarily accurate.  The scores show that we have much to be accomplished if we are to reach our 2010 goals. We are addressing those issues on a daily basis at Nations Ford. By starting with strategic planning and teaching and learning in the earliest grades, our upper elementary faculty can build and broaden curriculum at higher levels of cognition.

We use a variety of data to meet the instructional needs of every student. Creative teaching techniques include new wireless technology, SMART Boards (interactive white boards) and direct instruction with research. Teachers are constantly engaged in professional development to strengthen their understanding of pedagogy, research and practice and the social issues facing our students. Our teachers are stepping up to the plate and delivering to meet the needs of every child. For students who may be struggling, our teachers use a flexible approach and differentiated instruction; for those with high levels of learning, our teachers may need to undertake intricate research with students. We will do whatever it takes.

Teaching and learning is the core of what we do. The opportunity of Freedom and Flexibility with Accountability was afforded to me when I assumed the principalship of Nations Ford Elementary.  This will give the entire faculty and staff a greater responsibility to challenge our learning and how we choose to meet the needs of the school community.  Our staff is highly qualified and experienced, and the number of teachers with advanced degrees and National Board certification is increasing. Their pursuit of additional learning shows their dedication.

Nations Ford Elementary School has a rich and varied history, both as a neighborhood school and a former magnet school. At Nations Ford Elementary School, we know the only way we can move to the head of the class is to keep a strong focus on teaching and learning. This focus, along with the core values that are embedded in our school culture, will ensure that the academic achievement of every child will continue to improve.

Sincerely,

Gif Lockley

Principal
