Metro School serves approximately 200 students all of whom are significantly cognitively disabled, ranging in age from 5 to 22, who have been determined by their Individual Education Program (IEP) team to need the restrictiveness of a public separate school placement. Many of our students have severe medical and physical needs; many of our students are in need of total physical care and assistance; and many have other multiple disabilities such as visual impairments, hearing impairments, and autism in addition to their cognitive challenges. Student assignment to Metro School is through the IEP team process for all current CMS students. For students moving into CMS from either out-of-county or out-of-state, parents are to contact the district EC Central Office for school placement at (980) 343-6960 and ask for a school placement coordinator. Metro School does not serve students who live outside of Mecklenburg County.
The school offers instruction in academics based on grade-appropriate standards following the NC Extended Content Standards' Curriculum, as well as in music, art, media skills, community-based instruction, horticulture, consumer science, prevocational and vocational skill instruction and adapted physical education. Speech-language, OT, PT, VI and HI services are provided in accordance with students' IEP recommendations.
Classroom and support area teachers work on grade level teams to provide consistency in instruction aligned with the North Carolina Extended Content Standards. Literacy and numeracy are embedded in all instruction throughout the day in the classrooms and in support area classes using such programs as the Edmark Reading Program and Saxon Math.
The CMS Elementary Science adoption (McMillan/McGraw Hill) kits are present in each classroom for hands-on instruction in science. Reading, writing, math, science, self-help, work skills and other content and non-academic areas of instruction form the basis of the classroom schedules, based on students' IEP goals and the NC Extended Content Standards.
Students are assigned to chronologically-aged classrooms across grade level teams. There is an elementary team to serve students who are age appropriately served in grades kindergarten through 5; the middle school team serves students in grades 6-8; the high school team serves students in grades 9-12; and the transition team serves the students who are in their last 2 or 3 years of school. Teachers serving elementary and middle school students team teach; students in high school change classes across their team for instruction in math, language arts and science.
Metro School sets high expectations for student achievement, and staff development activities provide on-going support and information to the staff in order to achieve these expectations.
Metro School is fortunate to have the support of a strong PTO, strong community commitment through the work of our many volunteers and partners, and strong family support. Metro School is proud of and is very fortunate to have an on-going partnership with the Second Ward High School Alumni Association. We always seek the support of additional volunteers and appreciate the many donations of instructional materials and supplies provided by our parents, volunteers, community, and PTO.
