The K-5 Reading Program

Imagine It:

SRA/Open Court/Imagine It! Reading is the core reading program used by all Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.  It is a comprehensive program used in all classrooms, to teach the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.  It provides a balance of children's literature, phonics and skill based instruction.

Imagine It! completely addresses the five key areas of Reading.

Students will begin instruction in these key areas as early as Pre-Kindergarten so they understand not just how to read and write, but the meaning and purpose of what they are learning:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Systematic, Explicit Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

Students will learn these skills while exploring fun and exciting stories based around several themes.  Below are the six to ten themes the students will learn more about.

Supplemental programs are also used to meet the needs of various groups of children at River Gate.  These include the following:

  • the Open Court Intervention Program
  • Reading Mastery
  • Corrective Reading
  • SRA Early Reading Tutor
  • William & Mary
  • SRA Specific Skills Series
  • SRA Reading Lab Series

Here at River Gate Elementary, every classroom has at least a 90 minute literacy block daily.  During this block you will find a variety of activities.  A portion of this block is devoted to whole group instruction which helps build a strong foundation. Reading Workshop time makes up the remainder of the literacy block.  During this time students work in small groups or independently, allowing the teacher to provide instruction for students based on individual needs.  You might find a group of students completing a center activity, some student taking an Accelerated Reader test, a small group of students working with a teacher assistant, while other students are working with the teacher.

As part of the K-3 Intensive Reading Program, students that need additional support with the Reading Curriculum will receive at least 45 minutes of Literacy Remediation.
