McClintock Guidance & Student Services

gen-apples:

Purpose

The purpose of the Guidance And Student Services Department is to provide a support system to help each student reach his or her academic and personal potential. Grade level counselors work in conjunction with grade level administrators to assist students who are having difficulties or need extra support. The middle school counseling program is tailored to the developmental needs of adolescent students. The emphasis of the program is on school adjustment, self-worth, social skills, and academic progress. Counselors address these issues through individual counseling, small groups, and classroom guidance. McClintock Middle School students are encouraged to visit the counselor's office regularly for academic planning, social concerns, career planning, and testing information.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Absentee Makeup Work

The guidance department will arrange parent-teacher conferences. Please contact the grade-level counselor to set up a conference with your child's teachers. Also, if your child is absent for an extended period of time, you may contact the Guidance Office to request homework assignments. Please keep in mind that we need one day advance notice to gather assignments or specific information. The counselors can be reached at (980) 343-6425.

Career Development

Ava Long-Embry, Career Facilitator, works with all eighth grade students to help them with career decisions. She works with our guidance counselors to help our students make a smooth transition to high school. She will be happy to see you about graduation requirements, courses of study in high school, or the career and technical education pathways.

Also, several websites are available on our College and Career Information page that can be useful in helping your student make career and college decisions.  You can also access her website, which contains lots of useful information, at http://pages.cms.k12.nc.us/avalongembry

Reading: Summer Reading Lists

SUMMER READING LISTS

We encourage students and parents to download and print our "Summer Reading Lists" (.pdf) for use during summer break.  Encouraging children to read over the summer is an excellent way for parents to promote reading for pleasure and to help their children maintain literacy skills developed throughout the school year.
