McClintock Participates in the Charlotte Mecklenburg library’s “Big Read”
As you may have heard, the Charlotte Mecklenburg library is launching a county-wide “Big Read” literacy event. This program is designed to engage the community in reading and discussing a single novel. The novel for adult readers is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. For middle school readers the novel is Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli and for elementary readers the book recommended is The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. All public libraries in Charlotte Mecklenburg will host activities involving these books and the community from January 26 through March 3, 2009. For information about the Charlotte Mecklenburg library’s “Big Read” activities, log onto: www.plcmc.org. Click on “The Big Read”.
McClintock Middle School is joining this community-wide reading event by hosting several activities for students and staff. McClintock’s book club will read and discuss Maniac Magee and The Sneetches, as well as produce a wall display encouraging other students to read these novels. Several language arts classes will participate in activities related to the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Individual copies of Maniac Magee and To Kill a Mockingbird are available for student checkout in the media center. The videos, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Sneetches, are available for classroom checkout. A book display highlighting the “Big Read” titles will be on exhibit in the media center. A Mockingbird Bingo game and Mockingbird scavenger hunt will also be offered as part of McClintock’s participation in the “Big Read”. Check this website and McClintock’s marquee for further activities and events.
