Frequently Asked Questions:

1.  How does my child get a reading level?  All students in grades 2 - 5 take the STAR Reading test on the computer during the first 2 weeks of school.  The results of this test are translated into a reading range.  This range is in grade level equivalents, for example, 2.5 means a level that is appropriate for an average second grade during the 5th month of school.

2.  How is the goal set?  The teacher and the student conference using guidelines developed by Renaissance Learning to help set a goal.

3.  Does my child have to read books from the McAlpine Media Center?  No.  You can use books from public libraires, your home or any other source you may have.  It is a good idea for the student to have access to the book when the quiz is being taken.

4.  How can I monitor how my child is doing on the AR quizzes?  Look for the TOPS Report to come home after each quiz.  This report is vital in communicating with you the progress and success your child is making with AR.

5.  What if my child does not want to read a book that is AR?  That is perfectly fine!!!  In fact, the goal for this program is to improve comprehension and build a love of reading.  We encourage students to read both AR and non-AR books!
