A Message from our Principal

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and share my excitement about my appointment as the new principal of Matthews Elmentary School.  I feel privileged to be joining a school where the culture is centered on high levels of student learning, traditions are valued, and a commitment to collaboration between family and school has been established.  It is my intent to learn and continue these wonderful traditions and practices while seeking opportunities to enhance and accelerate the progress that has already been established at our wonderful school.

I would like to share some information about my educational background and professional experiences.  After graduating from college with a degree in education, I was hired to teach seventh grade as a language arts and social studies teacher at Carmel Middle School here in Charlotte.  Spending several years at Carmel, I was offered numerous opportunities to grow my leadership skills under several talented principals.  While teaching at Carmel I earned a dual master's degree in school administration and curriculum and instruction.  I began my administrative career shortly after graduation as an assistant principal at Ballantyne Elementary School.  I worked side by side with principal Sharon Damare' daily as we focused on building a strong, collaborative school climate and strong instructional practices that would maximize every child's potential.

On a personal note, I am married and my wife works full time, helping juvenile boys rehabilitate themselves, therapeutically, so they can be positive members of society.  Our year has been filled with exciting news, as we have learned that we are expecting our first child in July.  We also have a little Boston Terrier named Millie.

I am in the beginning stages of meeting staff members to learn more about the unique traditions that have been established and the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place at Matthews every day.  These conversations are just the beginning, as together we seek to develop strong relationships.  In addition I will be meeting with other groups, such as the school leadership team and the MPTO board as I learn about the school community.

I look forward to meeting all of you at upcoming school events and I appreciate the opportunity to work with your children.
