Irwin Avenue Open Elementary IB World School

International Baccalaureate

IB Authorization:

Irwin Avenue is in the authorization phase of becoming a Primary Years IB Programme. In the Fall of 2004, a federal magnet grant was awarded to three schools in Charlotte Mecklenburg with Irwin Avenue one of the recipients. During the three years of the grant, teachers and administrators were trained in the PYP philosophy and developed lesson plans to meet the IB criteria. Although the other two schools successfully completed their authorization last year, Irwin Avenue chose to use an additional year to prepare for authorization and will complete preparation this Fall.

Primary Years Program

Internationalism is the central concept to the Primary Years Program for International Baccalaureate. The PYP schools focus on student learning and the qualities exemplified through the IB Profiles and Attitudes. Often called the "habits of the mind" the profiles of international students are the following:

Student Profiles are:

Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk-takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Caring, Open-minded, Well-balanced, and Reflective.

Student Attitudes are:

Appreciation, Commitment, Confidence, Cooperation, Creativity, Curiosity, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Independence, Integrity, Respect, and Tolerance.

IB schools concentrate on six Units of Inquiry per grade level which are transdisciplinary and inquiry based. The curriculum for North Carolina is taught within this framework using best practices of instruction. IB believes that students construct their own learning by actively engaging in research and learning experiences.

When you enter the front doors of our school you will see a large display of international flags and a board with the Units of Inquiry being studied at each grade level. Please take a look at what we're doing and look for a marker that designates the current unit of inquiry.

              • Who we are
              • Where we are in place and time
              • How we express ourselves
              • How the world works
              • How we organize ourselves
              • How we share the planet
