Accelerated Reader is an individualized reading program that allows each child to excel at his/her own pace and level of ability. The goal at Hornets Nest is to encourage children to read more and enjoy reading as a lifelong skill. Accelerated Reader provides that motivation.
Students at Hornets Nest take a computerized reading test (STAR) to identify the reading range that he/she will be required to read within. Their reading range is placed on the back of a name tag. From within that range, students read books and take tests to earn points. Tests are to be taken regularly. Students are encouraged to score 85% correct or higher on all tests.
How Parents Can Help Their Child in AR
Parents play an important role in AR. Your child's teacher needs your support in helping your child achieve goals set for him/her each quarter. A goal in AR is set for every student.
Parents are asked to help by:
-
Knowing your child's reading range
-
Making sure your child reads every night and signing his/her planner nightly
-
Helping your child pace himself/herself toward his/her quarterly goal
-
Encourage your child to take tests regularly on AR books
-
Check/discuss the TOPS report with your child after a quiz has been taken

How To Begin
1. Print out the list of AR book titles in your child's reading range. Use it to help your child select books.
2. Find time to take your child to the public library to check out AR books in his/her reading range. Having a collection of AR books at home will provide a never-ending supply of books for your child to read. Your child will be able to read an AR book every day and take tests. You will be providing the support that your child needs to make his/her quarterly goal.
3. Talk to or email your child's teacher when you have questions about your child's progress in AR. |
