Jeremy Feaster hopes to purify water in Third World countries

Harding University senior Jeremy Feaster is truly a modern day renaissance man. His breadth of interests and talents are endless. He volunteers for several humanitarian organizations, plays music and chess, and has a black belt in tae kwon do. On top of all his activities, he’s busy tackling International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses at school. This star senior also hopes to change the world by improving the drinking water in Third World countries.

“It really affected me when I heard about the water crisis in Tanzania,” Feaster said. “This is a problem that needs to be addressed because so many of us take clean water for granted.”

Feaster earned a rare high school internship at UNC Charlotte where he experimented with titanium dioxide in a chemistry lab. When interacting with ultraviolet rays, the substance can effectively break down pathogens in water. His goal is to develop a cost-effective water purifier using titanium dioxide for underdeveloped countries lacking water purification systems. Residents living in remote villages rely on creeks as their water supply, which is often contaminated. The idea is for residents to use the purifier in the daylight with the help of ultraviolet rays from the sun.

“Water is a scarce commodity there,” he said. “Some families may only get five liters of water daily where an American family uses 200 liters. That’s a huge discrepancy.”

Though his titanium dioxide research is still being developed, Feaster is on the right track. His work has earned him numerous science fair accolades from UNCC, the Army and the Herbert Hoover Young Engineer Award.

Feaster, who is ranked second in his class, wants to major in chemical engineering. He has applied to several top engineering schools including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University.
