Communication
It is our goal at Bailey Middle School to keep you well informed of what goes on during your child's day with us. In order for us to keep you up to date, we have created a mailing list for each grade level. Please take the time to sign up in order to receive notice of a new principal's newsletter as well as information from your child's team.
Reminder: At the end of each school year, you should go back to the grade level list and "Leave" the list then "Join" the appropriate list for your child's upcoming grade!
Visit teacher websites to learn more about what is going on in the classroom. Teachers may be contacted through both email and voice mail, however please consider discussing with them which one they prefer.
Volunteering at Bailey Middle School
Are you interested in volunteering at Bailey Middle School, but not sure where to help? There are many areas that are in need of parent volunteers. Perhaps you would like to assist with supporting your child's grade level, or helping with the Student Store, book fair or art exhibits. If you only have time to volunteer on the weekends, you may consider helping with the beautification team. Whatever your interest may be, we can surely find a place for you to be involved in your child's experience here at Bailey! Please take a moment to read the following from the Volunteer Committee: Volunteer Letter
Bailey's New 'Strikes' School-Wide Discipline Policy
The staff at Bailey have worked together to develop a new school-wide discipline policy for the 2008-09 academic year. It is based on a system of 'strikes' and 'strike outs'. Students will receive a strike in the agenda, which serves as a vehicle to inform a parent that his/her child has broken a classroom rule. This gives students and parents a formal record to keep track of infractions. Strikes may be given by any teacher or administrator. 3 strikes qualify as a strike out. If a student accumulates a total of 3 or more strikes from Bailey staff members in one week, they will receive silent lunch on Friday of that week.
Rewards will be given for positive behavior and good work. Special rewards will be given each quarter for students with no strikes and no strike outs. Our 1st quarter reward will be a trip to see a Charlotte Bobcats game during the school day in October for all students with no strike outs!
You may view all details of the policy here: Discipline Policy

Testing Schedule
Instruction in Charlotte Mecklenburg schools strives to be differentiated based on a students’ needs. One of the ways these needs are ascertained is through a variety of assessments. Parents are familiar with many of these, in particular the End of Grade (EOG) tests. There are other assessments that are a scheduled part of the school year and I will be letting you know about these as the year progresses. I encourage you to go to the CMS website and, under the quick link section on the right hand side, use the drop down menu for calendar and see the 2009-2010 testing calendar. While it is impossible to avoid some schedule conflicts it is always best for a student to test on his or her scheduled day. With this advance notice it should be possible to reschedule appointments or trips. The first of the state mandated assessments is the Eighth Grade Computer test. You can read about this by clicking on the link on the Bailey website.
EOGs and Formative Assessments
Most of you are familiar with the state testing program known as the EOGs (End of Grade). These are state wide assessments administered at the end of the school year. The data from these tests is posted, disaggregated, studied and used to determine bonuses for teachers and honors bestowed on the school. While these are important they do not give teachers much information about individual students and what they know or don’t know. For that information we use our local assessments which are known as the Formative Assessments. These give information about specific objectives and how students and classes performed. We analyze the data to see what needs to be re-taught, which students could benefit from small group tutorials and which objectives have been mastered. It is the Formatives that drive instruction and give us information to better meet the diverse needs of our students.
The Formative Assessments are done twice a year. They are given in Language Arts, Math and Eighth Grade Science. We give these during regular class time and work very hard to make these as non-stressful as possible. Teachers have a “testing window” during which they may administer the Formative Assessments. That window is from Oct.27-Nov. 7. The teachers will communicate more specific dates as they complete their plans for the coming weeks.
Thank you for your support and as always please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns that you may have.

Character Education
Character Education in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is a partnership with parents and the community to foster honest, responsible and caring students. It is an intentional and proactive effort to help students understand, care about, and act upon basic values that we all share. Character Education promotes a positive school climate where students are more polite, honest and respectful, enhances student achievement by improving school attendance and reducing classroom conflicts, and encourages community involvement and a lifelong commitment to helping others. You may read more about it at the CMS Character Education website.
